What is the Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?
Sleeve gastrectomy is a new procedure that induces weight loss by restricting food intake. With this procedure, the surgeon removes approximately 80% of the stomach laparoscopically so the takes the shape of a tube or a "sleeve". -
How much weight loss can I expect?
Most patients can expect to lose 60-80% of their excess body weight over a 12-24 month period with the sleeve gastrectomy. Stomach volume is reduced, but it tends to function normally and most food items can be consumed in small amounts. The surgery eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces the hormones which stimulate hunger (ghrelin). The surgery is very effective as a first stage procedure for high BMI patients and there are promising results for low BMI patients. -
How long does the surgery usually take?
The average surgical time is 40 minutes to an hour. -
What medical tests are performed prior to surgery?
Full blood work is completed as well as a check-up by one of our cardiologists. Only when these results come back clear, will surgery commence. -
What are the risks and complications of the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
As with any surgery, there can be complications. This list can include deep vein thrombophlebitis, non-fatal pulmonary embolus, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, splenectomy, gastric leak and fistula, post-operative bleeding, small bowel obstruction, and death. -
I am currently taking medications. Will they interfere with my surgery?
As part of the pre-operative medical form you are required to fill out prior to surgery, the doctor will review your medications and determine if surgery is a safe option for you. Additionally, it may be a good idea to discuss this with your primary physician prior to your surgery. The pre-operative medical form is included in your information kit. -
Will I have to diet before the surgery?
There is a pre-operative diet that is required. -
Is there a standard pre-operative medical form I need to fill out?
Yes. All potential patients are required to complete a pre-operative medical questionnaire. This questionnaire is included in your information kit. -
Do I need to bring money?
Yes. You should bring a small amount of money to pay for drinks after you are released from the hospital or for food and drinks for your support person if you have brought someone with you. If you would like to tip the drivers, you may certainly do so but it is not expected or required.
