The mini-gastric bypass or one anastomosis bypass is a highly effective weight loss procedure. The majority of weight loss is caused by the restriction of food and calorie intake. However, a small component of the procedure is directed at limiting calorie absorption due to the small intestine bypass. A minimally invasive approach (Laparoscopic) makes it a simpler procedure with less operative time than the gastric bypass. It has a lower risk of leakage or intestinal obstruction as compared to gastric bypass. Bypass creates a small stomach pouch that fills with just a small amount of food and the small intestine bypass limits the calorie absorption. |

Bypass has excellent short and long term results. It is a very effective alternative for sweet eaters. Advantages include rapid initial weight loss and higher total average weight loss than other procedures. However, this is major surgery and it carries all the associated risks and potential complications. Absorption of essential nutrients is reduced, which can cause medical complications. |
