  • What is the Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a new procedure that induces weight loss by restricting food intake. With this procedure, the surgeon removes approximately 80% of the stomach laparoscopically so the takes the shape of a tube or a “sleeve’.
  • How much weight loss can I expect?

Most patients can expect to lose 60-80% of their excess body weight over a 12-24 month period with the sleeve gastrectomy. Stomach volume is reduced, but it tends to function normally and most food items can be consumed in small amounts. The surgery eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces the hormones which stimulate hunger (ghrelin). The surgery is very effective as a first stage procedure for high BMI patients and there are promising results for low BMI patients.
  • How long does the surgery usually take?

The average surgical time is 40 minutes to an hour.
  • What medical tests are performed prior to surgery?

Full blood work is completed as well as a check-up by one of our cardiologists. Only when these results come back clear, will surgery commence.
  • What are the risks and complications of the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?

As with any surgery, there can be complications. This list can include deep vein thrombophlebitis, non-fatal pulmonary embolus, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, splenectomy, gastric leak and fistula, post-operative bleeding, small bowel obstruction, and death.
  • I am currently taking medications. Will they interfere with my surgery?

As part of the pre-operative medical form you are required to fill out prior to surgery, the doctor will review your medications and determine if surgery is a safe option for you. Additionally, it may be a good idea to discuss this with your primary physician prior to your surgery. The pre-operative medical form is included in your information kit.
  • Will I have to diet before the surgery?

There is a pre-operative diet that is required.
  • Is there a standard pre-operative medical form I need to fill out?

Yes. All potential patients are required to complete a pre-operative medical questionnaire. This questionnaire can be filled it out online.
  • What should I bring with me?

You should bring slippers, comfortable loose clothing, toiletries, books, and a pillow if you would like. There is wireless access, so feel free to bring your laptop. A recommended packing list is included in your information package.
  • How do I stay in touch with my family?

Weight Loss Forever provides you with unlimited telephone access to your friends and family while you are in the hospital.
  • Do I need to bring money?

Yes. You should bring a small amount of money to pay for drinks after you are released from the hospital or for food and drinks for your support person if you have brought someone with you. If you would like to tip the drivers, you may certainly do so but it is not expected or required.
  • Do I need a passport?

Yes. You will be traveling through the United States, so you will need a passport.
  • How long is my stay and why?

Your total stay will be approximately 6 days. This includes a day at either end for travel and 4 days for the surgery and recovery. You will recover for 2 days at the center and 2 days in our exclusive condominium – complete with staff to ensure your comfort.
  • How long will my recovery be and when can I return to work?

This depends on the individual as some people heal faster than others. However, many people are able to return to light office work within a week and the majority return to work within 2 weeks.
  • What kind of care can I expect right after surgery?

Weight Loss Forever has a first-rate team in place to ensure your pain is well managed. You will be regularly assessed and monitored at all times.
  • What will my diet be after surgery?

Weight Loss Forever has developed dietary guidelines collaboratively with Dr. Daniele Colin Ruiz, Dr. Pomp and Cornell University as well as with former VSG patients in order to provide a comprehensive and realistic guideline for our patients. These dietary guidelines cover everything from the first few days and weeks to ongoing lifetime maintenance and are included in your information kit.
  • How soon should I begin to exercise after the surgery?

This is a very personal decision but walking is strongly encouraged right after surgery. Light to moderate exercise can begin as soon as you feel ready.
  • How will my stitches be removed after the incisions heal?

Your stitches will be dissolving, so there is no need to have them removed. Our surgeon uses a plastic surgery technique for closing your incisions to ensure minimal scarring.
  • How should I arrange the best after-care and follow-up?

Weight Loss Forever has a post-operative plan that you will receive in your information kit. It details the follow-up care that we recommend you arrange with your primary care physician.
  • Weight Loss Forever has staff that will pick you up in one of our air-conditioned medical vans and transport you directly to our centre.
  • I have a spouse/friend who is coming with me for support. Where can they stay?

Weight Loss Forever will arrange for an additional bed to be placed in your private room at the hospital for your support person. They will then accompany you to the 5 star hotel for your recovery. We encourage our patients to have the support they need with them.
  • Do you have financing available?

Yes. Weight Loss Forever is an accredited health care provide through Medicard Finance Canada. You can apply online and www.medicard.com or by phone at 1-888-689-9876. Applying is easy and you will have an answer within 24 hours in most cases. The rates will depend on your credit and we have had patients who were declined at their own banks but approved with Medicard.
  • What happens if I cannot have the surgery for medical reasons after I have given my deposit?

In the event your surgery is postponed for medical reasons before you travel for your procedure, the deposit will go toward the next appropriate surgical date. If you have a condition which prevents you from completing your surgery after you have arrived, Weight Loss Forever will either refund you the balance of your fees minus the costs of your stay and medical care or they will allow you to reschedule at no further cost (except for the cost of flights) at a later date once your condition has been resolved. This option is ONLY available if you have purchased the ‘Comfort Package’.
  • Is this procedure eligible for a tax deduction?

Absolutely. The cost of the procedure, your flights, food and some associated expenses are all valid medical claims. Revenue Canada and the IRS both recognize the VSG as a valid medical expense. A receipt will be provided from Weight Loss Forever and can be used for this tax deduction.
