Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is commonly referred to as breast implants. There are two different types of implants; one is sub-glandular and is placed under the breast tissue. This is typically done if you have enough tissue to cover the implant, the second type of implant is sub-muscular and is when the surgeon creates a pocket in the pectoral muscle and inserts the implant beneath the muscle. This procedure will be done if Dr. Rodas does not think you have enough breast tissue to cover the implant. Both implants are no better than the other and Dr. Rodas will make a recommendation once he consults with you.

Do I Need Breast Implants?

There are a variety of reasons to have a breast augmentation procedure, some of which include:

  • Women who have small or underdeveloped breasts
  • Women who have experienced massive weight loss and have since lost volume or firmness
  • Women who have lost volume due to pregnancy and breast feeding
  • Women who require reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy
Who Qualifies for this Procedure?
To qualify for this surgery, you should be in good health without any underlying serious medical conditions that could increase risk from surgery. It is very important for the patient to ensure they have a positive attitude and are realistic about the final results. There is no best age to have this surgery although some surgeons will mention waiting until after you have finished development and after you are finished having children as your breasts will change during pregnancy and while breast feeding. Surgeon’s will often recommend women wait until they have finished having children, but the decision is up to you.
What size should I go with & what will they look like?
Most patients once they have had the surgery will wish that they had gone a size bigger then what they originally requested so the surgeon will suggest that you go a size or two bigger then what you anticipate because once the swelling goes down, the breasts will be considerably smaller. Dr. Rodas will most likely recommend your final size because if they are too small, there may be undesirable, loose, puckering skin around the breasts.
Pre-Operative Preparations:
Prior to surgery, you will need to go to your family doctor and have an ECG and CBC (complete Blood Count) along with these medical processes you will need to submit before photos. You will also be required to read and complete our questionnaire on our website. Remember the surgeon will only do what is requested. Be specific and note any problem areas you would like fixed.
What are the Risks and Possible Complications?
Complication rates are very low; however, common risks include, but are not limited to: excessive bleeding, bruising, tissue death, loss or increase of sensation, asymmetry, implant rupture, infection and capsular contracture. Dr. Rodas will explain any other associated risks that may be specific to your case. You should be prepared for scarring. Dr. Rodas does a remarkable job, but there are instances where complications may arise that can cause unfavourable scarring.
If I Get Implants will I be able to Breast Feed?
Yes. You still have a good chance to breast feed with implants. The percentage of course will be reduced if you also require a lift as that procedure is more invasive and may end up cutting a milk duct. With implants, you may also have a reduced milk supply. If you have any other concerns, please do some research or ask Dr. Rodas to provide you with more information.
What is the Recovery & Downtime?
It is highly recommended that the patient book their post-operative follow-ups with their family physician prior to their surgery. It is also recommended that the patient bring a companion due to extremely reduced mobility. You will be in a support garment that is fitted to your shape and body and the garment is to be worn anywhere between 4 – 8 weeks or longer if specified by the Dr. Rodas. Swelling and soreness will begin to decrease anywhere between 3 – 4 weeks, however, the swelling can last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year and you will likely not see your permanent results until about 1 year post-surgery. During the first few weeks post-surgery, you should not return to work unless you have a job that does not require a lot of mobility. Your new implants will seem extremely elevated but will eventually settle when the swelling starts to decrease.
How Long will my Breast Implants Last?
Your breast implants can last a lifetime, although, if you decide to have children and breast feed you may want them redone. The average breast augmentation lasts between 10 – 20 years.
