Am I A Candidate?
Bariatric Surgery Candidate
Am I A Candidate?

There are many things to consider when deciding if weight loss surgery is an option for you. We will consider the following aspects to decide whether you qualify for a bariatric surgery or not:

  • Clinically obese – Do you have a BMI over 30? If so, you may be a candidate.
    Calculate BMI
  • Do you have comorbidities or a family history of health problems (heart disease, etc.)?
  • Do you have a history of good faith attempts at weight loss such as diet & exercise?
  • What is your individual medical history like? Contact us to get your medical assessment.
How Can I Make a Decision?
  • You and only you can make this decision.
  • Research, research, research
  • Talk to your doctor.
  • Join our support groups.
  • Watch our information video to get better educated.
  • Ask us questions.
  • If you are able to lose weight, what is the primary reason you cannot keep your weight off permanently?
  • Do you want to eliminate the hunger you always feel?
  • Are you prepared to give up the ability to use food as a reward?
  • What is your weight loss goal? For example, do you want to lose as much of the extra weight you carry as possible? Or would you be happy with less than that amount?
  • What are the health implications if you do not achieve your weight loss goals?
  • How much ‘maintenance’ are you willing to put into your operation once it is done? Can you make time for the adjustment schedule of say, laparoscopic banding, in addition to regular follow-ups required of any weight loss surgical procedure?
  • What is the ‘back-up plan’ if the procedure you choose fails to produce your weight loss goal? What will your bariatric surgeon do? Will you be referred elsewhere?
  • How fast do you want to lose the weight? For example, do you urgently need knee replacement surgery and must lose weight relatively quickly?
  • To succeed, weight loss surgery requires hard work from you. What support can you expect post-surgery? Does the program offer support groups, psychological support, exercise or physical therapy? Is there a dietary plan to help you develop better eating habits?
  • Are you prepared to face the altered body image induced by massive weight loss? If not, are you willing to undergo further plastic surgery such as body contouring?
  • Is a minimally invasive (laparoscopy or lap) approach important to you?
  • What are the short-term complications (within 30 days of the surgery) of each procedure?
  • What are the long-term (lifelong) complications of each surgery?
